Each year, GAGHA organises an Australia wide research poster competition on a specific theme. The competition encourages anyone with an interest in German-Australian history to research a story and present it in an interesting and visually engaging way. There are classes of entry for Secondary, Tertiary and Open entrants, and the top two finalists in each class in each State or Territory will be presented at either the GAGHACon or IGGC (both are biannual conferences) to decide the winners in each category and overall winner.

Next year, with the commemorations WWI coming to a close, the theme is "The Aftermath of War - Challenges and Resilience in German-Australian Communities".

Submissions close 1 April 2018, with finalists notified by the 15th of April. Finalists will be asked to produce and send a hard copy of their posters to GAGHA by 1 May 2018. Finalists will be judged at state/territory events in May and June 2018.
